Q: How do I use an FTP website?, What is FTP?
A: An "FTP" website is a web page set up for downloading using the File Transfer Protocal (FTP). Use Internet Explorer to access FTP sites (download files). Just type the FTP site address in the address bar (e.g. ftp://ftp.microsoft.com) and press enter. Some require a username and password which you can enter like this: <username>:<password>@ftp.microsoft.com. Username would be the account name. You can also use the "Login As" command available from IE's 'File' drop down menu (which is only available after trying to load a FTP site). You an also find special programs for handling FTP file transfers TO and FROM a website. I like to use FileZilla [no relation ]

Show Hidden Programs In "Add/Remove Program" List:
Some programs are hidden from the "Add/Remove Program" List in Windows to prevent users from deleting the wrong thing. Alter this system file to have all programs displayed [be careful when using this!].

  • Open My Computer and locate C:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf. Double-click the file. Next to some of the programs listed will be the word "hide". Delete this word next to the files you want to show up in "Add/Remove Program" List.

  • For WindowsXP users there is a powerful tool available for configuration. Open 'Run' on the 'Start' menu and type in gpedit.msc. This opens the Group Policy Editor. Go to this page at Microsoft Help and Support for a How To guide on using it. go to this page to find out more on how to use it with SP2 features.

    Performance 'tweaks':

  • Set network card speed: If Windows® has to detemine the network speed it tends to do it over and over again sapping some processor power so set your NIC to fast speed and leave it there. Click on your 'Device Manager' expand your 'Network Adapters' and change the setting from 'Auto-Sense' to Full Duplex 100Mbps (assuming your hub or switch can handle this speed) .
  • Increase Windows Performance. Move Windows 'page file' to increase speed. Placing your 'page file' on a separate Hard Drive can help a lot. See this article at Support.Microsoft.com
